Price and odd niggle aside, the Canon R3 is a delight, albeit an expensive pro-focused delight. This is the camera for professional photographers, and enthusiasts keen to take a step into the world of professional image making.
Pros:
  • Beautifully built, Fantastic image quality, Battery keeps going and going, Includes a neat eye-tracking form of auto-focus, Plenty of controls, Vari-angle screen in a pro-style body, Supports 6K RAW at 60fps and 4K at MP4 at 120fps

  • Eye AF is really hit and miss, USB Type C charging isn't always reliable, Pricey

The R5 and R6 were significant introductions for Canon last year, but the R3 takes things up a notch with the ability to shoot at 30fps, a new (or re-introduced) method of AF subject selection and a high-resolution vari-angle touchscreen.
Pros:
  • 24Mp full-frame sensor with full AF coverage, 12fps/30fps continuous shooting with continuous AF, Eye Control AF
Cons:
  • 6K raw video requires lots of storage capacity, Control layout different from EOS-1D X mark III and existing R-series cameras, Less durable buttons than on the 1D X III
