Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Review – Still A Banana-Slamming Good Time
Nintendo has been slowly but surely breathing new life into their Wii U library by porting it over to the Nintendo Switch. The latest game to get this treatment is Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze .- Framerate and resolution are improved
- Game is still fabulous
- Funky Kong is pretty useful
- Not much has changed
- Funky makes the game too easy
- No idea why ‘lives' are still a thing
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze for Switch Review
Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze's addition of Funky Mode makes it more accessible without reducing the formidable platforming difficulty to a walk in the park. There's still a lot of challenge, even with the extra help Donkey's Funky uncle affords.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
We didn't quite remember how difficult Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was, or perhaps we're a bit embarrassed to admit it took us a few hours this time to master a game we'd beaten already four years ago.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is a perfect fit for the Switch, delivering impeccable platforming goodness with Donkey Kong and his family. It's beautiful both from a visual and auditory standpoint and each level you play has its own identity or unique flavour.
- Excellent platforming mechanics
- Level design is impeccable
- New Switch features take the edge off the huge difficulty curve
- Funky Kong is radical
- Incredibly good soundtrack
- Beautiful artistic direction and design
- A ton of secrets and completionist centric stuff to do
- Controls sometimes feel unresponsive or clunky
- Steep difficulty curve that can cause some frustration
- Very tight timing windows on some platforming sections
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze review - One of the best platformers on Switch
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is a brilliantly inventive 2D platformer that deserves to be considered alongside Nintendo's best

- with lush graphics and charming music
- Incredibly challenging
- but never feels unbeatable
- New Kongs encourage different playstyles
- Will simply be too difficult for some tastes
- Co-op play is a disappointment
Retro Studios' Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze joins Mario Kart 8 , Pokkén Tournament , and Hyrule Warriors as part of the recent trend of Wii U games reappearing on the Nintendo Switch.
Game Review: Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is the latest Wii U port to hit the Nintendo Switch and if you missed its initial release in 2014 and are planning on picking it up, then you're in for a treat…perhaps banana themed treats!- Satisfying
- yet challenging platforming gameplay
- Crisp
- colourful visuals
- Meaningful supporting characters
- Funky Kong Mode is a speed running dream

Don't Miss It This Time
When Tropical Freeze released on the Wii U in 2014, it was exciting because it marked Donkey Kong Country's belated entry into the world of high definition. It played well, included tons of nostalgic and novel platforming ideas, and offered a significant, but fair challenge.
Masterpiece
Everything about this game is perfect. The fact that its hard and i wont beat it in a day or 2 while working two jobs like i did mf mario oddesy makes its better.
