Nikon AF-S DX 35mm f/1.8G Lens Review

As I indicated at the beginning of this review, I am probably a little biased in favor of prime lenses when it comes to photography. Until someone discovers a way to make an affordable zoom lens with a maximum aperture of f/1.4 there will always be a place for prime lenses.

Nikon 35mm f/1.8G DX AF-S Nikkor

A small, fast and sharp prime f??r $200 or less you can't go wrong. There are better performing lenses out there, but they are all larger and more expensive. The only reason I traded away this lens is the focal length. IMHO, 35 mm is too short for portraits and too long for most other situations.

small; light; sharp; affordable

no weather seal; focal length a bit too long

AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM), which represents a significant advance in AF lens technology. SWM uses ultrasonic vibrations-rather than a gear system-to focus the lens, providing incredibly smooth, silent and precise autofocus operation.

Nikon AFSDX Nikkor 35MM F1.8G Lens AFSDX35 review

The 35mm ƒ/1.8G DX fills an obvious hole in Nikon's lineup, and with its very reasonable price point Nikon may have found a way to ride out the recession. In our tests, the lens performs very well, with good results for sharpness at ƒ/1.8, becoming excellent at ƒ/2.8.

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1:1.8G DX review

Excellent image quality when stopped down just a little; Fast and accurate autofocus with full-time manual override; Generally attractive rendition of out-of-focus regions ('bokeh'); Resistant to flare; Low price;

Slightly soft and low in contrast wide open; Lateral chromatic aberration somewhat higher than traditional 50mm 'standard' primes; Prone to purple fringing and bokeh chromatic aberration, most visible at large apertures;

Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G Lens - Brand New review

While picking this unit, we found plenty of reasons to put it on this list, but what really stood out to us was the different variables available with different accessories. Not a lot of units offer that kind of choice for users and those that do are only between one or two accessories, unlike the...

Provides users with an aperture range of F/1.8-22 for outstanding images, Features a Silent Wave Motor autofocus system with a screw-on filter type, Designed to be compatible with DX-format as well as FX and DX in crop mode, Also comes with a four-year extended service coverage from the...

Lacks any hard stops while using the manual focus, Users might notice a bit of barrel distortion while using it, Bokeh feature doesn’t work as ideally as it does on other types of lenses
