Super Mario Odyssey Review – A New Era
Comparing Super Mario Odyssey to over thirty years' worth of Mario games is difficult, because it's impossible to remove the affects of nostalgia from a series that started my love of video games in the first place.
Pros:
- Outstanding balance between action and exploration
- Never stops surprising
- Huge amount of fan service
- Looks and sounds fantastic
- Excellent boss battles
- Cappy
Cons:
- Some hidden "secrets" spoil surprises that happen late in the game

Super Mario Odyssey honors much of what makes other 3D Mario games great, plus it adds plenty of its own flavor to the Mario stew thanks to its capture mechanic. Mario Odyssey can keep you busy for hours and hours if you want it to, and you probably will.

Super Mario Odyssey (Nintendo Switch) Review

Super Mario Odyssey review
It’s the relentlessly brilliant variety that elevates Odyssey above and beyond any recent platformer you can care to mention, and a fair few other Mario games as well. Racing towards a distant flagpole is all very well, but this feels like a proper 3D affair in the same way that Super Mario 64 did two decades ago. Only now you can play it wherever you please thanks to the Switch’s portable charms. So yeah, Super Mario Odyssey is an incomprehensibly fun video game. One that’s big and silly and totally essential if you’ve already got a Switch sitting at home. Not only does it show off what Nintendo’s new console is capable of, but it reminds you why Mario has endured for so long now: roaming free with the fella around the vast new kingdoms just feels great. Not yet indulged in a Switch? Odyssey is good enough to have you reconsider. I mean... Mario as a T. rex: what more excuse do you need?
Pros:
- Huge worlds to explore
- Jam-packed with invention
- Cappy changes how you play
Cons:
- A bit easy at first

Super Mario Odyssey review: Nintendo nails it
We've been reviewing games for a very long time, since the late 80s, and there are only a handful that can boast as much talent as Mario's latest caper.
Pros:
- A masterpiece in game design
- Tonnes to do and collect
- Puzzles and variety a-plenty
- Genius use of the new Cappy gameplay mechanic
- The standout game for the Nintendo Switch
Cons:
- Er
- That you'll have no time to tend to anything else in your life because Mario is so darn near-perfect
