iPad Mini 4 review: A long wait makes for a potent upgrade

After a yearlong wait, we finally have a properly upgraded iPad Mini. While it adopted the iPad Air 2's super-slim aesthetic and got a similarly great screen, the iPad Mini 4 makes do with Apple's dual-core A8 chipset.
Pros:
  • Vibrant screen
  • iOS 9 is great for multitasking
  • Solid performance
  • Respectable battery life
Cons:
  • Rotation lock switch is gone
  • Still less powerful than the iPad Air 2
  • Base model only has 16GB of storage

Apple iPad Mini 4 Tablet Review

This year we got (at last) a good iPad Mini, there are a lot of great and improved features and although it has been claimed to be a shrunken iPad Air 2, it clearly isn't, hardware-wise it's quite different.
Pros:
  • Great display
  • Premium design
  • Good cameras
  • Multitasking
  • Reasonable battery life
Cons:
  • Only 16GB storage for the base model
  • No microSD storage
  • A bit expensive
  • Performance is a bit under iPad Air 2
  • Audio quality could be improved

Apple iPad mini 4 Review

The Apple iPad mini 4 is a top-notch small-screen tablet with unparalleled build quality and app support, but it's still hard to justify the jump in price over the iPad mini 2. Farewell, iPad mini 3 , we hardly knew ye. Casually announced at the end of Apple's iPad Pro presentation, the iPad mini 4 replaces last year's mini 3 as the company's high-end small-screen tablet. The iPad mini 4 is a lot like its predecessor in many ways, save for some key hardware upgrades that make it feel faster. It's a great small tablet that runs smoothly, with a fantastic app experience and a premium feel—but it's hard to justify the $399 base price (for the 16GB model) when you can buy the still-solid iPad mini 2 ($29.99 at eBay) for $269. Design and PricingAvailable in gold, silver, or space gray, the iPad mini 4 ( at Amazon)  is just about identical to the iPad mini 3, except a bit thinner and lighter. It measures 8 by 5.3 by 0.24 inches (HWD) to the iPad mini 3's 8 by 5.3 by 0.29 inches. And the new mini 4 weighs just 10.4 ounces compared with the mini 3's 11.7 ounces, making it even more comfortable to hold on your daily commute. There are no drastic changes to the...

Apple iPad mini 4

Overall, the iPad mini 4 is a very good device, and a return to form of sorts for the mini line. It still lags behind the iPad Air 2 in a number of ways, but for those who prefer the mini's smaller form factor, it's an appealing tablet.
Pros:
  • The thinner, lighter design is even easier to hold than past iPad minis
  • A more powerful processor boots up the iPad and opens apps faster
  • Rear iSight camera has been upgraded to 8MP, with slo-mo video recording and burst mode shooting
  • Colors are sharper and more accurate in updated display.
Cons:
  • Still often feels like a step down from iPad Air 2
  • No 3D Touch display
  • 16GB capacity will be too small for most users
  • 1.2 MP iPad FaceTime camera feels outdated
  • The design has been tweaked enough that old iPad mini cases won't fit.

Apple hasn't revolutionised the iPad Mini with this fourth model but it's certainly one of the best sub-10-inch tablets you can buy right now. A desirable combination of slick performance and longevity, combined with some serious media chops, make the Mini 4 a solid choice for almost any user.
Pros:
  • Super thin and light
  • Slick performance
  • Great battery life
