FUJIFILM X-S20 review

It's easy to get carried away and lose sight of just how far we've come in the smartphone world. Apple's iPhone 14 is 7.8 millimeters thick but can communicate directly with satellites, boasts photographic talents that eclipse dedicated cameras and action cams, and does so starting at just $799.

Improved low-light camera performance, Clever safety features (you hope you won't need)

Improvements feel evolutionary, eSIM may prove a headache, iPhone 13 offers much the same for $100 less

FUJIFILM X-S20 review

The iPhone 14 is very similar to the iPhone 13, which itself was very similar to the iPhone 12. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad phone — it’s just less of an upgrade for anyone using a phone that’s only two years old.

The X-S20 is a surprisingly capable APS-C camera, giving you 2020 flagship-level performance for a reasonable price. It lacks the autofocus performance of its competitors, but it makes up for that by cramming in a ton of features for videos and photos alike, giving content creators room to experiment and grow. It shoots charming, high-quality images, solid 4K video and arguably has more character than its competitors.

FUJIFILM X-S20 review

The Apple iPhone 14 isn’t a huge upgrade on the iPhone 13, yet it still is a great phone with a top camera, good battery life and all the iOS benefits.

Clever safety features, Very good battery life, Reliable camera, Fun colours, You’ve got an ageing iPhone: If you’re on an iPhone 11 or older, then the changes here will make a notable difference.

Stuck on a 60Hz display, Minimal differences to the iPhone 13, You’ve got an iPhone 13: The changes from Apple’s previous phone aren’t enough to warrant an upgrade this year.

Fujifilm X-S20 review: a mid-range marvel

The Fujifilm X-S20 simplifies stills photography and video content creation with a host of auto shooting modes that include a dedicated vlogging mode, automatic scene detection, and improved subject tracking. It also ups the video ante by offering 6K/30p 4:2:2 10-bit internal recording. Then there's the bigger battery, plus everything that made the X-S10 such a great all-rounder. It's a shame that these updates have warranted a steep price hike over that camera, which makes the X-S20 a hard sell when the older model is still excellent.

Super-impressive video features; Excellent handling for beginners; Bigger battery capacity

Pricey; Still no weather proofing

FUJIFILM X-S20 review

The Fujifilm X-S20 is a very attractive proposition. It offers a lot of the X-H2 experience at a fraction of the cost, and in a more compact and convenient chassis.

Compact and lightweight body, Vastly improved battery life, Dedicated headphone socket, Improved autofocus performance, Up to 6.2K30 / 4K60 video

Single SD card slot, Video AF and IBIS lag behind the competition

FUJIFILM X-S20 review

The Fujifilm X-S20 is great for travel photography. It has a relatively portable and lightweight design that's good for travel, and its battery life is excellent for a mirrorless camera.

Relatively portable., Excellent battery life., Great image quality and autofocus.

Not weather-sealed., Viewfinder is a bit small and uncomfortable.

FUJIFILM X-S20 review

Slightly better cameras but otherwise, not much of an update - buy the iPhone 14 Pro or switch to Android instead

Better low-light photography, Slightly longer battery life, Action mode gives super stabilised video

The same performance as the iPhone 13, No Dynamic Island or Always-On display, 60Hz screen
