Nokia 808 PureView (Unlocked)

The Nokia 808 PureView ($699 list) is an engineering exercise and a collector's item. It's also a near-total failure as a modern smartphone. It packs an amazing 41-megapixel camera sensor, but thanks to an exceedingly long development time, the 808 PureView runs the archaic Symbian OS instead of...

No 4G; Call connection issues; Archaic Symbian OS is a relic; Hit-or-miss touch response; Few apps; Some preloaded apps are broken; Expensive even for an unlocked phone.

Nokia 808 Pureview review

It's been a long time since Nokia has produced handsets good enough to make would-be buyers salivate. But when it unveiled its Pureview 808 at Mobile World Congress earlier this year, the extraordinary 41MP camera had the assembled throng on the edge of their seats, right up to the point Nokia...

Amazing camera that's unparalleled in the current market; showcases potential for Nokia's Windows Phone 8 devices

Symbian; buggy; underpowered; very heavy; feels like a proof-of-concept unit not a finished product

Nokia 808 PureView

Is a picture worth a thousand words? How about $700? That's the going price of the unlocked version of the Nokia 808 PureView, a phone with a 41-megapixel camera, the highest yet on such a device. The technology behind this camera enables some the best photos we've seen from a phone.

Takes amazing photos and videos; Attractive design; Good Maps and Navigation apps

Outdated Symbian operating system; Low-resolution display; No HDR mode; Much fewer apps than Android and iOS

Nokia 808 PureView review Review

The Nokia 808 PureView's most compelling feature -- some might say it's only feature -- is its 41 megapixel camera. This clever technology lives up to the hype and can turn out some truly stunning shots, beating all current smart phones known for their imaging prowess, including the iPhone 4S and...

Excellent camera that's comparable with compacts; Snapper performs well in low light; Good screen readability under direct sunlight; Robust build; MicroSD card slot

Extremely sluggish web browsing; Symbian OS lags behind the competition; Ovi Store needs more apps; Low-resolution display; Hefty and bulky

Nokia 808 PureView review

What does this leave us with? A cluttered exterior with underperforming internals; a decidedly lacklustre screen; an outstanding camera that crushes its rivals; great battery life; and a mobile OS that's hooked up to every piece of life-extending equipment that it can be.

Nokia 808 PureView from zero to hero?

The Nokia 808 PureView is the new powerhouse of camera phones with its 41MP camera and provides decent playback options with its built in 720p video playback with Dolby audio along with 1080p HDMI output with an on board media hub.

Messaging on the Nokia 808 PureView is easy; with the ability to add homescreen shortcuts to create a new message or audio message or open the Messaging app.

- All folders have the same basic icon making it harder to differentiate at a glance.

Nokia 808 PureView

The 41-megapixel snapper is the star of the show. Crammed with functions and producing pin-sharp, colourful snaps, this is the best we've seen on a smartphone.

Fantastic camera; grabs clear Full HD video; impressive battery life; decent performance

Outdated OS; disappointing virtual keyboard; few apps; chunky body
