Samsung Galaxy K Zoom review - Super snapper

The smartphone has claimed many scalps - the portable games console, the MP3 player, the satellite navigation system - but the point-and-shoot camera has clung to survival because a large, zooming lens doesn't sit neatly with smartphone designers' lust for thinness.

Superb camera with unrivalled zooming capability; Sharp and bright display; Removable battery; Expandable storage

Chunky compared to regular smartphones; More camera features than most will use; Lower screen resolution than others; Poor internal storage

Samsung Galaxy K Zoom review

Samsung makes plenty of quality electronics products and we've been taken by many of its smartphones and cameras over the years. Now it's condensed much of that expertise into one phone-camera (or should that camera-phone?): the Galaxy K Zoom.

4G connectivity for fast and direct sharing; Android is a great operating system; full phone with all the apps you'll need; more slender than S4 Zoom; image quality about on par with equivalent compact

Camera components still make it feel horrible as a phone; mere 8GB internal storage; zoom button placement feels off; some image processing and lens sharpness issues; no aperture/shutter priority modes

Samsung Galaxy K Zoom review

It's probably a long time since you owned a phone as chunky as this, so it will take a bit of getting used to. Because of its size, it feels like a step backwards in terms of design, but if it means you don't need to take a camera everywhere you go, perhaps that's not such a problem.

Big zoom; Excellent camera for a phone; Good build and general specs

Very bulky; Not ideal ergonomics for a camera

The basics Are you ready to ditch your point and shoot for just a cameraphone? Samsung's betting on you carrying around only one gizmo that does it all with its lens-heavy, camera-orientated Galaxy K Zoom, the successor to last year's Galaxy S4 Zoom.

Last year's Galaxy S4 Zoom had plenty of things right with it, mostly in the camera department, but it was simply far too big to really fit in your pocket; This time around, Samsung's slimmed things down with the K Zoom, all thanks to a handy retractable lens, making it much more capable of fitting...

Samsung's slimmed down last year's model with the K Zoom, but it's still very bulky; It measures up a hefty 20mm at its thickest point, more than double than LG's flagship G3, and it also weighs up at 200g, making it not the easiest blower to cart around.

Samsung Galaxy K Zoom

The curious case of the phone-camera crossbreed

Optical zoom is great for photo composition; High customisable software

Screen not pin-sharp; Bulky and heavy; Oversaturated display colours; Poor battery life

Samsung Galaxy K Zoom

: The Galaxy K Zoom has a proper zoom lens. If you want an excellent snapper with great zooming capabilities this could be the one.

An excellent optical zoom and lightning fast performance make the Galaxy K Zoom an exceptional camera phone

Samsung Galaxy K Zoom

We know that the smartphone has eaten the compact camera's lunch, but Samsung thinks it still has one or two tricks up its capacious sleeves before the plates and cutlery are finally cleared away.

Bulky, but a great hybrid device

The camera is FANTASTIC, on paper 20mp and 10x optical zoom makes an average stand alone camera, but combined with the Android OS and Samsung software it easily replaces my fancy Sony Cybershot camera.

10 zoom; xenon flash; HD screen; build quality; photo results; Only 8gb internal memory; no tripod mount

Why didn't this exist before?

What an awesome phone! I previously had a Samsung Note 2, which has a bigger screen than the K Zoom. I love this phone, because I normally carry a separate camera with me on walks. I hike a lot!
