Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 Telephoto Zoom Lens Review

The Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 Telephoto Zoom Lens is extremely sharp at every focal length, but costs more than most cameras. If you're an event shooter with a Sony camera system, it's likely that the Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 Telephoto Zoom Lens ($1,999.99 direct)($2,499.00 at Amazon) is a lens that is essential to your kit. It retains a maximum f/2.8 aperture throughout its zoom range, and is quite sharp. If you can't justify its price, Sony also sells as slower, but longer zooming, 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6($2,499.00 at Amazon) for around $900. The lens features a light gray finish, with black focus and zoom rings. It's big, measuring 7.75 by 3.5 inches (HD), and heavy at just under 3 pounds. There is a tripod collar, which lets you mount the lens directly to a tripod or monopod. This provides better weight distribution and balance, lessening stress on your camera's lens mount. There are a number of switches on the lens—one to toggle auto and manual focus, one to let the camera control Direct Manual Focus or to engage it full time, and one to choose a limited focus range (3 meters to infinity) or to let the camer...
Pros:
  • Extremely sharp
  • Constant f/2.8 aperture
  • Includes tripod collar
Cons:
  • Expensive
  • Big and heavy
  • Noticeable distortion

Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS Lens - BRAND NEW review

This lens stands out to us due to its image stabilization technology. Even in videos, there will be almost no shakiness, and this is what all photographers want. The Nano AR coating is another great aspect because it makes the lens less prone to damage.
Pros:
  • Circular aperture has 11 sharp blades in it0., Maximum reproduction ratio of 0.25x, Nano AR coating to remove reflection and improve images, Steady shot image stabilization overcomes shaky camera angles, Easy manual focus with the direct-coupled mechanical focus system
Cons:
  • Circular diaphragm has 9 blades in it, 5 stops involved to improve the VC performance, Comes with a 6-year limited warranty by Tamron, Water and oil-repellent fluorine protective compound, Compatible with Teleconverters for added magnification

Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS SEL70200GM

I have only just briefly tested this lens at various focal lenghts and f stops on the Sony A7 III. What can I say The lens performs at all tested focal lenghts (70, 100, 135 160 and 200mm) and at the tested f-stop 2.8 - 5.6 really excellent!
Pros:
  • excellent optical performance fast AF solid built
Cons:
  • weight price

Sharp lens

I have owned versions of both the Canon and Nikon 70-200 f2.8 lenses previously, but I jumped ship to Sony last year in an attempt to decrease the weight of equipment I lug around airshows. This lens is not significantly lighter than the above and it carries a price premium.

Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS (SEL70200GM) - Review / Test Report

One of the core components of a professional grade system is a fast medium tele-zoom lens - such as the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS. Combined with the other recently released lenses and cameras, Sony can finally and truly compete with CaNikon in the high-class segment.

Overpriced.

Hunts for focus is low light, which is why you'd want this lens... Lower light. F2.8. it's heavy. I've shot a couple thousand images through this lens now because I really want to get to know it and I really want to like it- and while it's impressive when the AF nails it, (gripped A7R3) - the other...

We've established that this lens, like the several lenses we tested from its GM family, has all the makings of what makes a fantastic, must-buy lens. And it is... a fantastic, must-buy lens, that is, but only if you absolutely need to feel that gap in your arsenal.
Pros:
  • There's no denying the Sony FE 70-200 mm F2.8 GM OSS is both a beauty and a beast -- a beauty because of its sleek and beautiful black on white design
  • a beast because of its size and weight.
Cons:
  • Not bad, precisely..
  • more like a disadvantage
  • The FE 70-200 mm F2.8 GM OSS is heavy in weight and large in size, larger even with the hood and when mounted to a mirrorless body or a not-so-hefty tripod
  • Admittedly, it's no larger or heavier than other similar telephoto zooms.
